Great Challenges Before Us!

We, PEACEMOMO, fully welcome the DPRK-US Agreement today. The US and DPRK have reached an epochal deal to end one of the highest hostilities of the 21st century. For 70 years, we have waited for this. The Singapore Agreement is to end war and aggression and dismantle military confrontation and tension to create a crustal transformation in Korea and the world. Moon Jae-In’s government played an unprecedented, unique role. As unexpected this agreement may be, it raises equally unexpected questions. Are we really ready to do without enemy, hate, or militarization and instead start to change our lives and work together? It is due time for really challenging questions. The violence and damage caused by the division in Korea is too big and too deep. Too many people have been unduly affected by it too long. The way forward will also be long, requiring newly due capacities in civil society and government to build sustaining peace. The division-affected education also needs to change fundamentally. PEACEMOMO has been advocating transformative glocal peace education that problematizes the division and war themselves. Now every unfolding events in Korea will be the best resources for education and peacebuilding. It is the best time now to concentrate our efforts to foster new peacebuilders to sustain this precious opportunity.
